HAPPY BASTILLE DAY

Just took an online quiz and learned that the Bastille was stormed to find more ammunition. Any way I join the French in celebration. Other exciting news includes a possible reevaluation of Pluto’s status as a real planet. That could be a boon to future tourist visits. Oh, there is a dispute between the descendants of John Wayne and Duke University over the use of Duke. I feel that is less important than the status of Pluto. 900,000,000 light years away could be the boundary of the Milky Way. It seems that scientists have discovered the light from Red Giant stars. This means the Milky Way is much larger than we thought. I remember being awe struck by the Milkey Way as seen on the plains of Eastern New Mexico. Also the candy bar goes nicely with a Dr. Pepper.

Amist all the chaos that seems to cover the Earth like a fog in the forrest, there were some good events. The two contenders for the Afghan presidency have agreed to a complete ballot recount and even pubically hugged each other. And Brazil had the joy of not having Argentia win the World Cup , even though that did not bring happiness to Argentina. Porpoises are being attacked by dolphins in Cardigan Bay. What is next? It is probably not related to these attacks but New Zealand has a problem with rats and stoats. When there is a heavy fall seeds in a forest then the rats have a zillion babies and the stoats which are weasels then have a million babies and after they eat the rats they start eating the native flightless birds. I hope the stoats don’t start attacking people. It is a cloudy and beautiful day here in Eagle Rock. I took a nice walk and did not see either rats or stoats. It even rained a few scattered drops. Have the best Bastille Day ever.

4th of July and the Goldilocks Planet

Happy 4th. Way back in Tatum we used to celebrate at my grandparents house which was at the edge of town. There were two roads to their house, one of which was sometimes blocked by a barbed wire gate. That was to keep people from sneaking in the rodeo without paying. Anyway we always had fried chicken, corn on the cob, deviled eggs, water mellon and hand-churned ice cream. I don”t remember many fireworks. This brings me to the Goldilocks planet. It seems that the first planet thought to be sort of earth-like was not a planet but a sun spot. Glad I did’t buy a ticket to travel there. And even if it was a planet and there were intelligent creatures they would probably not celebrate the 4th or have pecan pie.

Is there much good news on the international front? Well, the leader of China is visiting South instead of North Korea. And North Korea is going to have their internal airline start flying for the first time in several years. Have not seen any shirtless pictures of Putin on the net. Can you imagine George Washington shirtless on the boat crossing the river? Anyway I really enjoy watching that historical movie about the 4th, Independence Day. Was that really based on actual events the government is trying to keep secret from us? Have a wonderful 4th and keep on the safe side of the fireworks.

NEANDERTHAL POOP

All kinds of new stuff from the wonderful world of science. One scientist feels she has found the poop from Neanderthals and thinks it proves that these early humans ate vegetables as well as meat. What if we find they some of the plants were genetically modified? I was a bit saddened that the latest findings on the Big Bang Theory’s earliest moments might not be accurate, though I really didn’t understand it anyway. Then there is the dense star about the size of the earth that is composed of carbon crystal. In other words it’s a really really big diamond. In a different vein a tiger attacked a man in a boat and carried him away into the jungle. Would hate to have that happen to me or any of you. Be careful around tigers.

China has banned Hilary Clinton’s book, Hard Choices, that I am now reading. Also for the first time their police are carrying guns. I don’t think my reading had anything to do with the ban or the guns. It is a long book.Russia has banned short skirts and really high heels for it’s female police officers. One official said maybe they were trying to attract males in order to find a husband. Some exciting news from the town of my early days, Tatum, New Mexico has grown to over 800 persons. It’s bigger, I think, than when my mother played basketball there in the 1920,s. Go Coyotes!!

SOME GOOD NEWS!!

Just as it seems that these are among the worst of times not the best of times a silver lining appears among the clouds of doom. Unexpectedly the US is in the final 16 of the World Cup and Cory and Topanga are back as parents in a new show, “Girl Meets World.” On top of that Mr. Rutschman is back running mega miles. Now we can face the looming crisis almost everywhere. Other good news, kinda, Ebola is not easily transmitted or the world would look like “World War Z.” And you will not be arrested when they search my iPhone unless they have a warrant. I’m not sure why they would arrest you anyway. How about the Mississippi Senator who wins the primary with the help of Black voters?

Am still reading Hilary Clinton’s “Hard Choices.” Must take some time to read murder mysteries and science fiction. Speaking of reading, a new study finds that children who are not read to in the delivery room or as soon as possible are far behind. I’m saying that couples who think they night mate and produce offspring should start reading to each other as soon as possible and not just nonfiction. A few suggestions: War and Peace, Huckleberry Finn, Spot, Good night Moon, Sounder, and many many more. If the reading dose not seem right you should find another mate. Now if only they would prove that Dr Pepper Ten is great for your health.

SUNNI MILITANTS AND TEACHER TENURE

There is probably little or no correlation between the Sunni militants and the judges ruling on the constitutionality of teacher tenure laws in California. It is true that the militants may be advancing toward Bagdad and that Tesla may build its battery factory in Texas and Eric Cantor’s primary defeat does not portend harmony in the House. Now concerning the tenure ruling. The victors are sure that this will help make education better. It won’t. Why are there tenure laws? The paraphrase the Federalist Papers, If teachers were angels we would not need to terminate some and if teacher evaluators were angels we would not need the protection of these laws.

Well at least the Iranians are upset about the Sunni militant advances.

Blog for June 6, 2014.

70 years ago! I don’t remember much about WWll. We saved tin foil and had a big ball of string and bought 10 cent war stamps. Tatum, New Mexico was such a long way from Normandy. What bravery and sacrifice as those young men charged on the beaches of Normandy. Although there is still  much violence in our world it does not compare to WWll. We still have many challenges. Boko Haram, honor killings for women who marry for love, ethnic and religious  slaughter are among the many challenges of today. There are rays of hope. Donald Sterling has agreed to the sale of the Clippers, the kings are a game ahead in the NHL, and I like both teams in the NBA Finals.  And it seems that domesticated dogs may have helped hunters with large kills of wooly mammoths as much as 27,000 years ago. Good for dog man relationships but really bad for the wooly mammoths.

A report on teachers in Mexico. One teacher made 46,846 dollars a month and apparently Mexico has the oldest teachers in the world. I think I read that 1442 teachers we between 100 and 105 years of age. And if that is not startling enough over 5 billion people do not have the internet. There are two new ecological happenings. The toxic Cane Toad has been discovered in Madagascar and a new to America bark beetle that turns the inside of trees to slime apparently attacks over 200 different types of trees. But some things that seem new are not. Whatever causes Lymes disease has been found in amber and is about 15,000,000 years old. Finally it seems that the Milky Way will collide with our closest galaxy neighbor in a couple of billion years and if that is not scary enough our sun will blow up before that. On the bright side, a new season of Orange is the New Black is on Netflix as well as season 4 of The Glades. For every dark cloud there is a Silver Linings Notebook. For all the recent graduates, may you find whatever will bring great joy and perhaps lots of money.

Bob Cole’s Monday, April 7th Blog

It is again time to take out the garbage and the days are getting longer. Therefore it must be Monday and April. No longer am I able to know my place in the universe by when grades are due. On my daily walk through the streets of good old Eagle Rock I saw five lizards and that is probably a good omen. Headlines stated that there is a vast oil deposit in California’s Monterey Shale Formation. Light sweet crude is at  $100.71 a barrel today. In 1935 when some producers were selling more than New Deal quotas the price dropped to 10 cents a barrel. Gasoline was really cheap but then the down side of the situation was the Great Depression. When there is an downside there is always a little good news. The Black Plague wiped out a great portion of the population but the wages of surviving laborers went up.

Just say a video about a cat cafe in Tokyo. Customers pay about 8 or 9 dollars an hour to feed and pet cats. Many of them cannot have the felines in their apartments. I had a couple of cats they would probably have paid to not pet. One was a little gray cat that was a mighty hunter but only wanted to be petted a couple of times a year. Jellybean was the other and she brought home gloves, socks, ivy leaves and such. She had a tendency bite on occasion.  A new thought for a pet cafe, a woman  helps rescue tree sloths when their homes are cut down. It would be a really trendy tree sloth petting cafe. The woman says that even though they have really long claws they would not rip you apart like the Wolverine. Now to take my blue, black and green cans to the front curb. Have a great Monday, April 7th, live long and prosper and may the odds forever be in your favor.

Bob Cole’s Friday Blog

Am sitting here getting ready to see Noah. He certainly would not have much to do in the Western United States these days. And at his age (500?) it would be even more difficult to get a job as an ship builder. Have met several people that are not quite 500 but have had difficulty finding new employment. Maybe we should economic centers for the aged. I certainly would like employment as a viewer of old science fiction series on Netflix. And an added bonus would be a good salary which increases as I get older. Oh, well. 43 has opened an exhibit of his paintings of world leaders. The critics have been rather kind. Should I paint pictures of my former students? My students drew many pictures during my classes, maybe it would be better to put them on display.

How do the Democrats get a Supreme Court more to their liking? How come the conservative members out number the liberals? Have Presidents ever been happy with the Supreme Court. The answer to the last question is no. Jackson is supposed to have said that the Court has made a decision let them enforce it.T Roosevelt once made some comment about the Courts lack of backbone. FDR was so angry that he tried to get 4 additional members appointed. And finally many of the Court’s decisions are not the ones I would have made.

BOB COLE’S BLOG ON CRIMEA AND COSMIC INFLATION

Could the discovery of the little ripples that seem to prove the theory of Chaotic Inflation have in itself caused a rift in the fabric of space and time? That might explain the events in Crimea, the missing airplane, Phil Jackson in New York and Mr. Rutschman’s new thought process. Are all events linked to each other in such a matter? Now what do I know about Crimea? Was there a song “Crimea River?” And as a youth in the beginning of the Iron Age I had to memorize “The Charge of the Light Brigade”. It is about an ill fated charge by the British in 1854 in the Crimea.

As for Phil Jackson, he has roots back there in New York. Besides the zillion dollars he is getting Phil has memories of the great Knicks team on which he played. And that zillion dollars may have meant more than the memories. Of the airliner the mystery just deepens. Now for the greatest of these puzzles, what caused even for a moment the quantum jump in Rutschman’s thought process? Is it the start of a new method of thinking or just an an adjustment to the space time shift?

BRAVE NEW BLOG BY BOB

What great pending danger threatens the world at this moment? Have both the liberal and conservative press failed to alert us and why? And what is this peril? As often happens the truth came to me as I was walking in the Eagle Rock neighborhood not too far from the sacred and magical Eagle Rock. And it perhaps was sparked by a Ray Robinson post. Our atmosphere or stratosphere or some other sphere up there is just teeming with bacteria. Now we already know that our bodies are full of trillions or jillions of these little creature. What if they are not a product of evolution but an insidious invasion sent from way outer space.

Did a meteor nearly destroy life on this planet 60,000,000 million years ago? Or was it a space ship full of bacterium? Is it a invasion that will slowly lead to a take over by these diabolical creatures? Little by little our brains will be replaced and one day we will become the bacteria people. Perhaps this is already happening. Observe all the problems in the world, Ukraine, South Sudan, North Korea, New Jersey’s road closures, the Lakers record, and the fact that when Costco replaced Coke it was with Pepsi and not Dr Pepper.
