James K. Polk, Zombie Stalker

What a great idea to use the presidents as subjects of supernatural events. We could start with the James K. Polk, Little Hickory, and his role in saving the world from the tacky undead. The tale began  when a teenage James K.  survives  a violent attack that turns his three best buddies into zombies. Which, of course, he sadly has to dispatch.  Maybe we could get Justin Bieber or however you spell his name to play the young James. Next we go on to other presidents such as Millard Fillmore, “The Original GhostBuster.” A young John Adams, teaming with a young Thomas Jefferson, traveling around slaying all kinds of evil creatures could be a long running television series.

A Syrian pilot has defected to Jordan and several goats have been hired to eat an invasive reed on Staten Island. Perhaps these are not related but it could be like the butterfly’s flapping wings in South American causing a tornado in Iowa. In addition the northbound 5 Freeway being closed somewhere around Las Vegas could also be related. Anyway they are going to turn Staten Island into a park and maybe keeping some goats there. I think that is a good idea. More parks should have more goats. One of the goats was named Van Goat in chase you wanted more facts.

The mother and baby birds are still there!

I previously wrote about the  bird nest on our porch/balcony. Was worried that putting up awnings on back windows would scare the mother away. They were put on this morning an the mother has returned. Other great animal news is that there were four young skunks on our camp site at El Capitan State Beach. As everyone knows, four young skunks stealing cookies and potato chips on a June evening is great news. It means the world tipping point will be put off by 6 million years. If that were not enough, on my walk with manly miniature poodle,Kip, I turned South and at that moment saw two squirrels and four crows. All the animals and numbers are in alignment. This has not happened for three thousand years.

Now that we can take a group breathe and enjoy all the other amazing happenings. Tonight the Heat play the Thunder and if I am not wrong one of these interesting weather-named  teams will win. It is really hot and humid in Miami. Have been reading more about the 100 trillion or so nonhuman cells that are apart of each of us. There are  bacteria, virus, fungi and no telling what else. I don’t know about you but that makes me feel mighty important. Just think, you were not alone when you graduated or we even alone.

There was a video that was talking about how much poop and how many problems it posed health wise in developing countries. Also Microsoft is coming out with a new tablet and that should make Mac haters happy. But I don’t think this will help with poop disposal . Finally there is weather on Titan, a moon of Saturn. A lake of liquid methane about 3 foot deep covers a large area and the scientists think it bubbles up from a methane aquifer . But it would probably not be a good place to invest in beach property.

The Day The Costco $1.50 Hot Dog Venue Was Closed

It was a warm sunny day in Southern California and I was suddenly overcome with the urge to get the hot dog from Costco. My mind and heart were together along with my stomach in this craving. Since I am retired with nothing really pressing and having taken manly miniature poodle, Kip, for his walk I jumped in my car and headed for Costco. I parked some distance away and as I drew near the food venue I saw that here was no line, What luck, I thought. Then as I drew even close I saw a dreaded note, “closed for construction.” Now this is really a minor problem compared to nearly any other like the strife in Syria, Pakistan, Nigeria, and the length of the school year in LAUSD. So How to get over this. I just read the Big 5 ads. You can get watches, shoes,  guns, an inversion system, a 150 lb. crossbow and best of all a 5 power night vision monocular. Now if only they had a $1.50 hot dog with drink included.

You can see that possibly I have too much time on my hands and perhaps volunteer to help little kids or clear land mines . There are some many sites on the internet to learn useless random facts or maybe some of the great truths of life. Any I read again that coffee was great for the body and soul and that if your father was older when you were born and his father was older when he was born you may live longer because with age the tolemeres and the end of the chromosome get longer. If you want to know why ask Mr. Laderman.

Also read that big box stores such as Best Buy were having perhaps fatal problems. They cannot compete with the online retailers such as Amazon. Of course many more jobs will be lost. One day almost everything will be digital. One teacher for a million students, on line families and maybe just digital people. But could there ever be an on line $1.50 Costco hotdog? I think not. Now for my predictions.  The Supreme Court will announce some decisions on a Monday. Oklahoma City will win if the MIami Heat do not. A lot of money will be spent on attack ads but none of them will be aimed art you or I. Either President Obama or Governor Romney will win the presidency and someone claim that I wasn’t born on this planet

Robert Cole’s Vampire Graves in Bulgaria

At a time of economic turmoil and political polarization is there a light at the end of the tunnel? Or is there a tunnel? Sometimes there appears to be no good solutions and maybe there are none. But look at the good side of things. We are living longer and getting fatter. We would probably live even longer if we were not getting fatter. How can we stop the epidemic of obesity? We could eat less or perhaps be struck by world wide swarm of zillions of locusts. Or we could consume fewer sugary sodas.

Anyway Tuesday was a day of great events that, I think, portend a great year and decade. First there is the Transit Venus which I hope you did not look at with the naked eye. Second there was the Diamond Jubilee of the Queen. Finally and not least was the retirement party of Leonard Loo. I think the fly by of the Royal Air Force Jets was for him. On top of that a little bird has built its nest on our back porch and has laid 5 eggs. Among my people a small bird laying 5 eggs is a very good sign.

It means that all of you will get a good job or good grades. Or it could be that the job you did not get could have lead to your capture by brain sucking aliens. Speaking of that they found some Vampire graves in Bulgaria. Iron bars had been pushed through the dead bodies to keep them from coming back and sucking blood. I always thought it was wooden stakes. It would bee good to know in case of a breakout infestation of Vampires in the United States.

Robert Cole’s Wednesday May 30th Blog

Some incredibly exciting news: A dog runs about 1600km following cyclists in China. After being fed the canine ran about 60 km a day. That’s both hunger and commitment . There were a couple of mountains involved. That is real work ethic. On top of that I read that monkeys are really a pest in Delhi and they had even attacked a vice mayor causing him to fall off a tall building. One of the only ways to keep them out of your yard is to hire the handler of a larger meaner monkey to allow his monkey to pee around your yard. And I learned that the tomato has more genes than the human and that it shares 92% of genes with its cousin the potato. Can you imagine this news shown to the tomato on one of those who are you related to shows.

On my way to buy Dr. Pepper Ten I passed by the magazines and looked at the cover of Scientific American and was greeted by a story that stated that there are ten times as many nonhuman cells in our bodies than human cells. I wonder if they totally take over at times of stress or maybe boredom. I recall looking up at some of my students on a Friday afternoon and seeing an aura that must have been caused by that situation. During some faculty meetings I am sure that it was the take over of the nonhuman bacteria that cause some of my more caustic comments. Now I am thinking would it be possible to reproduce by simply splitting at a time of extreme take over by the nonhuman cells? Perhaps that will become a three part novel which will be made into four movies.

Now to all of you who are graduates or finishing the school year or finding a job or doing the many other things that are steps in his journey of life I congratulate you. Remember whatever you do if you fail you can blame it on the nonhuman cells. That’s better than blaming parents, teachers or even you pets. Have a great Wednesday and remember if it’s worth doing maybe it’s worth not doing,

Saturday

Have been pondering the answer to questions about our education system, our economy, our political system, and the fact that many CEOs make more money than I do. First, take education. If teacher training was more like Navy Seal training at least our teachers would be more ready to handle discipline problems. Although I think water boarding should be banned. One final step would be to take prospective teachers and have them locked in a room for several days with teacher training specialists armed with tons of butcher paper. The training doesn’t stop until someone gives up and rings the bell. Next  we need physically fit students. There should be 05:00 AM physical training to include marathons and mud runs. And what about a teachers’ retirement compound located near the sand dunes in the beautiful Mojave?

Now about the economy, what if all teachers were given 20,000 dollars a month if they agreed to spend it all every month. It the students got 10,000 think of the stimulus. Maybe they should use this idea with Greece. I should be at the G8 meeting or maybe not. I predict that the economy will someday get better and all of you will be able to pay off student loans before the turn of the century or sooner. Remember to keep spending on proms to help the many thousands involved in dress making, tux rentals and in infested areas garlic necklaces.

As for our political system it’s a bit flayed but so are most of the world’s systems. China is doing it’s 10 year change and all kinds of scandals and fireworks are popping up. Greece has many more problems. Russia has Putin again. That being said we need to go back to exactly what the founders war thinking in that second story in the summer of 1787. Was it “It’s really hot and the air conditioning isn’t working so let’s make a deal?” Anyway I love these election years and even as I have stated earlier the attack ads. They are no worse than many in the early years. If only Hamilton and Jefferson had had super PACs and the internet. Things are not getting worse they are just getting.

Should I get more in retirement than the CEO of Facebook does now? Could or should I have an IPO? What if it went for 200 billion? Actually I enjoy my retirement and if I had 200 billion would have to hire an accountant and might not have time to walk my manlypoodlekip.

It is getting t…

It is getting to be time to write a political blog. I will first say that if I am elected I will not pose nursing my child on the cover of Time Magazine. Since I am not nor will not run for office this should not have come up anyway. Even the worst of things such as Citizens Aware can bring some good. Think of all the jobs created making and distributing all those attack ads. Think of the spins-offs such as a video game, Attack of the Killer Super PACs.

You have to love presidential election years. I remember going to the local elementary school in Lubbock, Texas and voting for JFK. That was so long ago that Texas had a poll tax but being a first time voter I did not have to pay. Speaking of presidents I recommend the book, The President’s Club. It illustrates the complexities of the office and the relationships of the President and the living ex Presidents. Now who will win this year? I feel that there is a very good chance that Romney or Obama will carry the day. The polls are about even right now.

Now for the other news. Sadly there is only one fluent speaker of the Kusda language left in the world. Gyani Maiya Sen of Nepal is the last. The language is related to no other in the world. Will there ever be a time when the last fluent English speaker is visited by journalists? Perhaps as we develop large thumbs and forget how to speak that day when  textists becomes our only means of communication is not so far off. Oh, and these was one article about creating a Mockingjay.  Finally on the island of Crete they found a bone of a pigmy wooly mammoth. It seems that big animals isolated on an island evolve into much smaller versions.

From my mother …

From my mother I inherited a love of books and reading. Before television and in a small New Mexico town that lacked a movie theater her nightly readings to my older brother were a great source of entertainment. As my brother was some four and one half years older the readings had to appeal to both of us. We floated down the Mississippi with Huck, Jim and Tom. My heart was in my throat with the discovery of Huck’s dead father and tears came into my eyes as Huck mourned the death of his friend killed in a feud.  I have reread most of those books

I write about this as I return from  a visit to my mother. She still reads though her short term memory is almost gone.  Before we left my daughter bought her two new books and I hope she can enjoy them. She loves very clean romance novels . At the age of 99 she was the assistant librarian at her church  I wish to thank her for the effort of reading to us after a hard day’s work.

She built the house she lived in from 1961 until 2008 and she started backpacking at the age 0f 71 and I will write about in more detail later. A very happy Mothers’ Day to my mom. She is 103.

My very first blog.

Using the DNA from the bones of early Europeans it has been determined by some that the early farmers were probably from Anatolia. That is the males. Females of the area seemed to prefer the farmers to the local hunters. I’ll bet that really irritated the local men. And the bison are making a little bit of a come back. Some want to develop a herd on a reservation in Montana.I have been in that region and think I would be a happy bison there. Also from PBS I learned that both European Bison and wolves seem to be thriving in the restricted area around  Chernobyl. Can you imagine a Survivors episode based on that area? That might make the wolves happy. It could be that the local European women preferred a gift of flowers, vegetables, and fruit to a bison dragged to the cave opening.
